Especially for Visitors

A special welcome to all who are new to our community! We heartily endorse the United Church of Christ slogan: "Whoever you are and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” ...And you are!

Without question rooted in the Christian tradition, UPUCC unashamedly attempts to follow authentically the servant life of Jesus of Nazareth. Because we know God is present in other faith traditions as well, we often find ourselves on the edge of current cultural Christianity. We therefore embrace truth from all sources and laugh along at the joke that UCC stands for ‘Unitarians Concerned about Christ.’

UPUCC is an honest community of faith where no sincere question is rebuffed. At our heart, we are a loving, supportive and compassionate people. We warmly invite you to join us.

Our primary worship occurs at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. (Many times during the year an 8:45 a.m. Meditative Worship is offered as well. Please see calendar for specific dates.)

Dress is informal. Come as you are. Though our worship would not be considered ‘contemporary,’ neither is it highly liturgical. (We often describe ourselves as a ‘what you see is what you get’ community.) Everything that you need to participate fully in worship is included in the printed bulletin or found in the accompanying hymnal.

Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month. At Umstead Park UCC, all are welcome to Christ’s table. Communion is offered in a traditional manner, by intinction, during which worshippers who choose walk to a communion station take a piece of the bread and dip it in the cup.

  • When is your Christmas Eve service? We have one worship service on Christmas Eve. Our 5 p.m. service includes lessons, carols, choir and candle-lighting.
  • How Do I Get There and What About Parking? Umstead Park UCC is located at 8208 Brownleigh Drive, Raleigh, NC 27617. –link to map here- You may park in our parking lot or in any of the parking lots of adjacent businesses. Our church building does not look like a traditional church. You can see pictures of the building and our sign on the Our Building page.
  • What is Appropriate Attire for Worship? We are very much a "come as you are" congregation. Many of us wear jeans or other casual clothing for worship.
  • What Do I Do When I Arrive for Worship? There will be a greeter or two inside the main entrance who will provide directions, information and a nametag. Usually there are snacks and coffee and tea in the atrium as well. (Lots of people mingle and hangout here.) As you enter the worship space, an usher will provide you with a worship bulletin. You may sit anywhere you like.
  • What About Children? We provide a professional nursery for infants and toddlers. Children through 5th grade are included in the first portion of worship and then dismissed to special classes after a “Children's Moment.” For more information about our Children's Ministry, click here.
  • What Happens When the Service is Over? We invite you to stay and talk with others and with our pastor following the service. On the first Sunday of each month, we offer a Newcomers and Inquirers Gathering for about 30 minutes immediately following worship. This is an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the UCC as a denomination and UPUCC as a church. On the second Sunday of each month, an adult forum is offered after worship. (see calendar for details.)
